Discover Alderney’s Rich History with The Blonde Hedgehog

Nestled in the heart of Alderney, The Blonde Hedgehog invites you to explore the remarkable history of this unique island. Alderney, the third-largest of the Channel Islands, boasts a captivating past that is as vibrant and resilient as the islanders themselves. From ancient stone formations to relics of the Victorian era and echoes of World War II, Alderney is alive with stories waiting to be uncovered.
A Walk Through Time: Alderney’s Historical Highlights

Just beyond The Blonde Hedgehog’s doorstep, you’ll find Alderney’s fascinating history woven into every stone and pathway. The island’s Neolithic and Roman past comes to life through relics like the Standing Stone and The Nunnery, one of the oldest Roman fortifications in the British Isles. Walking through these ancient landmarks, you’re retracing the steps of civilisations that flourished on this island centuries ago.

Victorian Fortifications and the WWII Legacy

During the Victorian period, Alderney was heavily fortified by the British in response to the French extending the fortifications and harbour at Cherbourg, and transformed into a strategic defence hub, complete with an intricate series of forts and bunkers that now stand as solemn testaments to history. These fortifications served as vital points during WWII, as Alderney became occupied by German forces.
Eighteen forts and batteries were built to protect Alderney and the new ‘harbour of refuge and observation’, which was intended to be the base for a British fleet against any potential invasion by the French

Today, you can visit sites like The Odeon, a massive MP3 concrete tower which was built by forced labourers under the German occupying power in 1943 or the newly opened Hospital Bunker, one of the many WWII-era bunkers, where remnants of the island’s wartime past remain.
